NMC Issued Advisory for Indian Students to study Medicine Abroad

NMC Advisory for Indian Students

The NMC clarifies that these guidelines are mandatory for Indian students intending to practice medicine in India after medical studies abroad. Indian students who wish to pursue medical studies from foreign medical institutes are advised to ensure that the chosen institution complies with the FMGL Regulations 2021 before securing admission. Failure to do so may result in students being ineligible for registration with the NMC and subsequently ineligible to practice medicine in India.

According to NMC’s advisory and the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 the following conditions must be fulfilled.

  • Minimum Duration of Course + Internship : The medical degree abroad must have a minimum duration of 54 months (i.e., 4.5 years) of theory/clinical teaching + a 12-month internship (in the same institution abroad). The internship (or clerkship) cannot be fragmented across multiple institutions or countries.
  • Medium of Instruction : The course must be in English (or at least the medium must meet what NMC recognises) otherwise registration to practise in India may be denied. The foreign medical institution must be recognised in that country and its degree must qualify to register as a medical graduate there (i.e., you should be able to practise in the country of graduation). This is part of what FMGL expects.
  • Course Structure / Syllabus / Clinical Training : The syllabus, clinical training and internship must be on par with NMC’s expectations. Any deviation (shorter duration, inadequate clinical exposure, wrong medium, etc) can lead to disqualification from registration in India.
  • NEET & Screening : If you plan to practise in India post-abroad studies, you must have cleared the National Eligibility‑cum‑Entrance Test (NEET) (UG) for admission to the medical degree abroad as well (or meet whatever defined requirement). After completing abroad, you’ll typically need to clear the foreign medical graduate screening test (such as the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE)) or its equivalent before registration in India.
